2017 Cardrona Rookie Fest – Report

The Cardrona Rookie Fest, the first 2017/2018 World Rookie Tour stop, came to an end and the first rookies and groms had been qualified for the World Rookie Finals, to be held in Kitzsteinhorn at Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria, from the 10th to the 15th of April 2018.

mitchell-davern

Starting with the Halpipe competition, on the 4th of October, Mitchell Davern won his Junior Nationals age category by adding a crippler 720 on the last hit and landing it clean.

“I really wanted to push myself to see if I could get on the podium,” said Mitch. “Everyone was throwing down so I decided to try the crippler. It was a bit risky because I haven’t landed it that much so it was really cool to put down my run.”

Zephyr Lovelock won the Intermediate Snowboard Boys’ age group and impressed the judges by grabbing every spin, tweaking the grabs and maintaining consistent amplitude down the pipe.

Cool Wakushima – Rookie Girls

Zephyr Lovelock – Grom Boys

Meila Stalker – Grom Girls

Ending with the Slopestyle competion, on the 5th of October, Makayla Kellogg was one of the strongest female snowboarders of the day. Her rails were impressive with a 50-50 180 out, half cab to 180 pretzel, switch 50-50 to backboard, front 50-50 to front board, but the jump line was what secured the gold medal with a cab 5, straight air mute tweak, back 3.

lachlan-blackmore

Regarding the Senior Boys Snowboard age group, Lachie Blackmore became the winner thanks to his perfect landings combined with a technical rail line with hardways 270 on the down-flat-down.

“I was pretty nervous coming into today’s competition, there was a bit more pressure with it being a World Rookie Tour event as well.,” said Lachie. “I’m really pleased with my result because it means now I can go and compete in the World Rookie Tour finals in Austria next year.”

The Cardrona NZ Rookie Fest Snowboard Slopestyle Champions are:

The Black Yeti crowned the new World Rookie Champions

Takeru Otsuka (JPN) and Kokomo Murase (JPN) are Slopestyle World Rookie Champions 2017. Chase Blackwell (USA) and Sena Tomita (JPN) won the Halfpipe contest

The 2017 World Rookie Finals went down with fantastic vibes as the quest to unveil the next Rookie snowboard superstars heated up when the world’s finest young snowboarders converged on Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun, Austria. Around 140 riders from all over experienced a whole week full of snowboard action having fun in the Snowpark Kitzsteinhorn, and – of course – to battle it out for the famous and much desired title of the World Rookie Champion.

Chase Blackwell (USA) and Sena Tomita (JPN) are the first ever World Rookie Champions in Halfpipe. At this year’s edition, it is the first time that the World Rookie Finals include Halfpipe as a discipline. The title was hard fought as becoming the first World Rookie Champion in Halfpipe is one of the greatest rewards for tomorrow’s pro snowboarders. The riders field was 40 boys and 18 girls packed with a large variety of nations.

65But Chase Blackwell from the USA and Japanese rider Sena Tomita, who both landed heavy runs, were better than the rest, and take home the Black Yeti trophies and prizes such as TSG helmets, Nitro bags, Surfcamp from Surftolive, Pieps, Shooting in Kitzsteinhorn Monday-Wendsday, Ticket for 2 weeks freeride trip to Chile, Pieps, shovel.

Slopestyle World Rookie Champions are Takeru Otsuka (JPN) and Kokomo Murase (JPN). High creativity level and crazy riding skills were sent by this years’ World Rookie Champions. On the boys’ side, Takeru Otsuka (JPN) topped the podium after having thrown a Blunt 270 on the first rail, a Frontside Double Cork 1080 and a Backside Double Cork 1080 over the jumps and finished his run with a Crippler Transfer to Nose Slide Prezel on the last features. He came slightly before Davide Boggio (ITA) and Minsik Lee (KOR) who became 2nd and 3rd. Best boy in the Grom category (below 16 years) was Swedish shredder William Mathisen.

3421Kokomo Murase from Japan defend the title as female World Rookie Champion from last year and impressed the judges with her winning run including a Blunt 270 on the rail, a Frontside 720 and Backside 720 on the kickers and a Rock to Fakie to Switch Board Slide on the last feature. World Rookie Fest welcomes Top Rookies

Livigno and Mottolino Snowpark welcomed 144 competitors from 14 different Nations aged 9 to 18, competing in the 12th edition of the legendary World Rookie Fest.

Today, January 14, all participants got the chance to test the slopestyle setup during the open training session. Unfortunately poor snow conditions and wind storm for four days in a row didn’t allow the previously announced snowpark set up. Mottolino Snowpark shapers crew spent the last days to create the best possible slopestyle course for our Rookies. The final set up consists of a downrail, 1 table with 2 kickers each (12 meters, 16 meters) and another rail, the last jibbing obstacle.

Competition started today with the training day and a great opening ceremony, with the video première of Stronger, the Union Team Movie, and the welcome party. In the next days the Mottolino Snowpark will host qualifications. In two heats, rookies have to prove their talent for their entries into the super finals scheduled on the Wednesday 18th January. In the meanwhile, for tomorrow afternoon (Monday 16th January) Black Yeti plans a great program: at 16:30 the stunning video premiere “2016 World Rookie Tour TV Show” with the best moments from last season tour, follows by the gripping workshop “How to increase rider’s visibility”.

Get ready for incredible tricks from the world’s best young snowboarders in the slopestyle contests at the Livigno Mottolino Snowpark! This is the place of positive energy, cool tricks and good vibes!

The WSF represents a network of National Snowboard Associations (NSAs) who work together at a worldwide level to promote the development of snowboarding. NSA members can find a source of inspiration and support from the WSF for the activities they are conducting within their nation and by working towards the same goal: progression of snowboarding from the ground up. The WSF collaborates with the TTR Pro Snowboarding, the owner and operator of the TTR World Snowboard Tour and the TTR World Ranking System. Through this collaboration and coordination of events at the TTR World Snowboard Tour, The WSF and the TTR want to create an environment that fosters the development of competitive snowboarding. In February 2012, the WSF and the TTR hosted the inaugural World Snowboarding Championships in Oslo, Norway, an elite level event to be held every four years in alternating cities around the world. About TTR Pro Snowboarding & World Snowboard Tour
TTR Pro Snowboarding is a non-profit organization that oversees a professional network of events and athletes. Our objective is to develop and showcase the sport of snowboarding through the World Snowboard Tour, while facilitating a fair and open competition environment that includes innovative judging and ranking systems. We encourage riders to develop from rookies into world-class athletes through a 6 Star level rating system; which will be replaced by a new 4-tiered structure from October 2014. Under the new World Snowboard Tour 2.0, the 4-tiered structure will encompass Elite, International, National, and Regional event levels. Elite events will comprise the WST Pro Series (current working title). The Regional, National, and International levels of the WST 2.0 will make up the WST Qualifying Series (working title).

Black Yeti is back in Corvatsch

This year the Black Yeti has returned to Corvatsch to find the next pro rider, and first day of training at Corvatsch Snowpark was a blast!

IMG_9792More than 50 riders from 9 nations have warmed on the park obstacles through-out the day. Big up to the shapers’ work that have put together a perfect park for this start of season: first jib set with a downrail box and a flatdown rail, 2 table with 2 kickers each and a last jib set with wallride, 2 downrail.

Sunshine, mid temperatures and perfect snow were the excellent background for the first day of Corvatsch Rookie Fest stop.

See all photos of first day HERE!
