RECAP: Hochkeil Banked

WSF Banked Slalom Tour: Snowboarders overrun Hochkeil for 10th Banked Slalom Edition.

At the Hochkeil Bio Banked Slalom (Jan. 25th) in Mühlbach am Hochkönig (Austria), over 160 snowboarders from 13 nations enjoyed the smooth steep turn race in glorious sunshine. Many young snowboarders took the opportunity to ride with their peers and learn from the legends. Another highlight on the Hochkeil after the start of the season in September!

On Saturday, the Banked Slalom in the Hochkeil natural snow area in Mühlbach am Hochkönig celebrated its 10th anniversary. The course at the Arthurhaus lift was perfectly prepared thanks to Max Deutinger and his colleagues from WSV Updawgs and the Hochkeil team. This attracted more than 160 snowboarders of all ages to the foot of the Hochkönig to celebrate the oldest discipline in snowboarding, the banked slalom. Old-school boards from the snowboard museum were presented along the course. Riders who travelled by public transport or car-pooled were given a discount on the entry fee for the race on the natural snow course.

Due to the large number of participants, the training time was extended. Thanks to the modern chip timing system, there was enough time for the participants to tackle their three runs whenever they felt like it. This session format was particularly relaxed for the more than 40 kids, so despite the adrenaline of racing against the clock, there was no major competition stress. The ‘Bindingless’ classification, i.e. the boarders who surfed without bindings on their boards, was more about completing the course without crashing.

In bright sunshine, everyone from grandparents to toddlers showed off their skills on the board. The best of the three timed runs was ranked. Once again this year, the main prizes in the form of snowboards from our supporters Goodboards, Nidecker, Yunika, Nitro and Amplid went to the average times. This meant that every rider could really hope to win a prize, and all the children were once again able to take home a little something.
There were also awards for the fastest riders, with the main prize being a design trophy in the form of the Hochkeil mascot Keili by Lilo Krebernik, or goodies from SP Connect and cool glasses from Out Of.

Find all results here.

The events ended with the festive award ceremony at the Arthurhaus umbrella bar.

Many thanks to all helpers, sponsors and participants.

ABOUT BANKED BAKONY

Banked Bakony is an annual snowboard gathering to celebrate our beloved sport and the community we all live for – with some real “Eastern vibes” in the heart of the picturesque Bakony, Hungary.

The main attraction is a mad banked slalom race on Saturday, but the show starts the day before and ends until the last man standing the other morning.

It is a classic “non-competitive” competition, where legends are not only born on the mountain, but also grab the shovel, raise the glass in the bar or play some music for the fans!

Regardless of gender and ages we were attracting over 120 participants last year from ten racing countries, such as Austria, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, UK, Argentina, Romania and oc Hungary. The youngest competitor was only 6 years old while the wisest one was over 60 years of age. It is a great feeling to see generations merge together and celebrate the pure beauty of snowboarding during this event.

COMING UP: BANKED SLALOM PRESENTED BY JONES SNOWBOARDS AT AXAMER LIZUM (AUT)

The snake run is back in Innsbruck! It’s that time again: Banked Slalom, this year presented by Jones Snowboards for the first time, invites you to ride together at Axamer Lizum on Saturday, March 16, 2024. After the successful event last winter, the popular format for young and old is returning and will focus on the passion for shredding together in the banks. Although there are age categories, the focus is on the shared experience for snowboard enthusiasts.

The most original discipline combines the roots of snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding in one “ride”. The popularity of this spirit was already proven at last year’s Banked Slalom in the Axamer Lizum with over 120 starters. Snowboarders from young to old, male and female, with snowskates or regular snowboards, took part in the popular “snake run”.

An adrenaline-charged ride through the steep bends.

The challenge in banked slalom is to negotiate the manually “shaped” banked turns as quickly as possible. Even though the tracks become deeper and deeper as the race progresses due to the frequent use of the banked turns, it is important to find the optimal line. In various age categories, participants have the opportunity to compete with like-minded people and put their skills to the test. The Banked Slalom presented by Jones Snowboards offers a platform for everyone, from the youngest to the most experienced, in some cases former professional riders. In addition to the individual categories, there will once again be the unique and popular family classification, which allows parents and their children to compete side by side and take on the challenge of the Banked Slalom together. This special classification underlines the family character of the event and promotes togetherness across generations.

Axamer Lizum provides stage for Banked Slalom presented by Jones Snowboards

Only a few kilometers away from Innsbruck and perfectly accessible by public transport, the Axamer Lizum offers the ideal terrain for the Banked Slalom presented by Jones Snowboards. Not far from the slopes, there are perfect terrain structures as the basis for the “snake run”. The contest is framed at the start and finish area by great DJ sounds, moderation and casual “chill-out flair”.

With a mixture of competitive spirit and shared enthusiasm, the Banked Slalom presented by Jones Snowboards promises to be an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike. However, if you want to be there, you should hurry, as the coveted tickets usually sell out quickly.

All information about the Banked Slalom presented by Jones Snowboards and registration can be found at www.bankedslalom.tirol! Save the date and share the stoke!

WSF BANKED SLALOM TOUR: Full house for Banked Bakony 2024 (HUN)

Despite the unusual weather conditions in February organizers were able to hold the event and created a super fun spring session in the banks. Once again, the Eplény Ski Arena hosted the eagerly awaited Banked Bakony freestyle meeting, showcasing a fusion of various snowboarding styles. This year’s event saw a remarkable turnout, with 128 riders competing across eight categories on Saturday. The youngest participant was a mere seven years old, while the oldest rider, aged 56, demonstrated their enduring passion. In addition to the Hungarian snowboarders, the competition welcomed participants from Austria, Germany, Romania, Wales, UK, USA and even from Argentina.

The banked slalom, a distinctive and increasingly popular discipline in snowboarding, took center stage. Riders navigated a thrilling course adorned with banked turns, undulating waves, and other custom-built features, vying for the best time. The Banked Bakony is part of the WSF Banked Slalom tour, cementing its status on the official competition calendar. The organizers harbored a clear objective: to establish a cherished tradition, showcase the beauty of the Bakony region to both visitors and competitors, and put the Eplény Ski Arena on the international snowboarding map.

“We aimed to organize an internationally acclaimed event in Eplény, where not only competitors but also friends and spectators could revel in the experience. The competition format is highly captivating and easily comprehensible for all, even those unfamiliar with snowboarding. Descending the course mirrors the sensation of riding a wave, creating an exhilarating experience for the riders. Meanwhile, the spectators are treated to lively commentary, cold beer and delectable hotdogs. The presence of foreign riders elevated the event to new heights and witnessing the fun and passion they express towards snowboarding was truly inspiring for the local riders and rippers.” shared Gergő Koczka, the main organizer of the event.

Jake Simpson, winner of the Elite Men category was crowned by the defending champion Boti Fricz, who was forced to skip this year’s jam due to a knee injury. The british rider was hyped on holding the legendary “Wild Boar” trophy of Banked Bakony high and claimed the victory and whole weekend experience as an unforgettable trip.

“The entire ‘Banked’ weekend was an incredible experience! It felt fantastic, but also inconceivable to snowboard in Hungary. When we arrived, Thursday night, we immediately joined the shaper crew and took part in the digging. The course they created was super fun and technical. I loved the tight corners and chest high banks. It felt like surfing and jibbing at the same time! Totally unique experience combined with the crazy night time parties.” said Jake Simpson, the winner of the men’s Elite category, who was accompanied by his fellow brother, Joe Simpson.

The race in the Open Women category was also very interesting, dominated by the celebrated German super star snowboarder, Annika Morgan who joined the event directly from the X Games, Aspen.

“It was a truly unique experience to shred the local mountain of Eplény. I’ve never been here before, but the picturesque surroundings and beautiful forest just amazed us. Not to mention the banked slalom course, which felt super fun to ride and had a good flow. It was great to come to Hungary to take a break from the major contests and chill with my international friends for the weekend.” claimed Annika Morgan, the winner of the Open women’s category and X Games medalist.

The Banked Bakony Freestyle Meeting once again etched its mark on the snowboarding landscape, delivering unforgettable moments and fostering a vibrant community. As the event concluded, participants and spectators alike departed with memories to cherish and a shared anticipation for future editions.
