Norwegian Championships 2008

The Norwegian Championships took place this past weekend attracting incredible Norwegian riders who competed in both Halfpipe and Slopestyle formats. Tore Holvik and Kjersti Oestgaard Buaas stood atop the Halfpipe podiums as Gjermund Braaten and Helene Olafsen claimed top honours in the Slopestyle.

Geilo local Tore Holvik won the men’s Halfpipe with a solid run, as per usual, that included a FS Mute, a BS 5, back-to-back 9s and a straight Air Stalefish. Despite unfavourable conditions, Holvik displayed the utmost professionalism pushing forward to grab hold of the Title: “The conditions were bad with wind and flat light,” said Holvik. “But I managed to do my run, and now I’m just happy!” Following him in second place was Per Iver Grimsrud with Stian Sivertzen rounding out the top three.

On the women’s side, Kjersti Oestgard Buaas confirmed she’s one of the best female riders in the business, taking home the women’s Halfpipe title with a run consisting of a FS Indy, a BS Air, a FS 5 and sick Inverted 7. “The conditions weren’t the best, with bad visibility and a pipe that was a bit bumpy after a whole day of riding, which made it difficult to show your best riding” said Kjersti after her winning run. “But it feels good to win the NC, especially since there were many competitors this year.” Norwegian riders Lisa Wiik and Helene Olafsen took second and third in the women’s Halfpipe behind Kjersti.

The Slopestyle session continued the story of the Norwegian Champs. Local hero Gjermund Braaten was stomping with authority and bagged the men’s Slopestyle Title. Braaten tore the complex course a new one, with a Cab 270 to Fakie on the staircase, a Blunt to Fakie, a Switch FS Lipslide, and a FS Disaster Revert on the wallride. Braaten took it home on the 3-kicker line with a Cab 7 and stylish back-to-back 9s. Braaten was followed by Paal-Fredrik S. Brekka in second and Roger Kleivdal in third.

Back to the women, Kjersti Buaas was the favourite going into the Slopestyle, but to everyone’s surpsrise, Helene Olafsen took the title. Helene’s run consisted of sick Boardslide combos on the rails and three 360 variations off the kickers. Kjersti still threw down to take second as Lisa Wiik stood third on the Slopestyle podium.

The event value was a 3Star for the Swatch TTR World Tour (www.ttrworldtour.com)
