About ASF

With only a handful of athletes, ASF started its work in late 2017. People who suffered from war, as well as people who wanted to bring change to society’s thoughts, were joining ASF. Ultimately to change the world’s perspective towards Afghanistan.

In time ASF has developed a strong influence on sports development in the country. Snowboarding is one of the fastest-growing and most famous sports among Afghans.

In 2020 ASF won their first international medals from Pakistan (1 Silver and 4 Bronze).
ASF is now looking for international achievements in the future.

Corona World Championships Big Air starts Friday

Big things are going to happen in the Big Air sessions, starting tomorrow here in Yabuli, China. Today’s training at the Big Air site went comfortably well despite the bitter cold conditions. All riders warmed up nicely with good feedback from all riders. The set up is slightly restricted in size by the venue but what it lacks in inches it makes up in safety.

WCS 2016 BA Practice Yuki Kadano

This year has been a big year for scaffold jumps, which can’t be groomed so the riders are relieved to have a all snow setup with a smooth in-run and landing to work with at World Champs. The rider field is 38 men 10 women packed with big names and a large variety of nations.

Yabuli China will be the first World Championships of Snowboarding to include Big Air as a discipline. Big Air has been a part of the World Snowboard Tour since the Ticket To Ride (TTR) first began but this it the first time it is included in a World Championships.

WCS 2016 BA Practice Niklas Mattsson

The title will be hard fought as becoming the first World Champion in Big Air and winning a 40,000 US$ chunk of the 160,600 US$ Big Air prize pool will be one of the greatest rewards in snowboarding today.

World Championship of Snowboarding: strong rider line up and a perfect course

With the World’s best riders dropping in at Yabuli ski resort, the Corona World Championships are just about to start promising a top-notch line up in freestyle snowboarding. Shaun White has proven to the World that he is still the best pipe rider on the planet winning this year’s halfpipe at the Dew Tour in Mammoth Mt, California and just a few days ago taking out the Burton US Open title yet again in Vail, Colorado. When Shaun is on, no one can touch him. Shaun has confirmed that he will be competing in both Halfpipe and Slopestyle at the Corona World Championships in China this week.

Local boy Yiwei Zhang of China is doing the almost unheard of and has entered the event in all 3 disciplines of Big Air, Halfpipe and Slopestyle. He has the ability to do well in all 3 events and with a Chinese TV audience of 10 Million+ firmly focused on their local hero – this is his time to shine.

The real attraction for the Chinese audience will be the Women’s halfpipe where Jiayu Liu and Xuetong Cai are both currently sitting in the top 10 on the World Snowboard Points List and based on recent performances at Elite WST events could both be on the podium with their home town advantage and enormous local TV audience. * A complete rider list will be released after the full field has registered.

The Corona World Championships of Snowboarding courses are taking shape.

A global crew of some of the world’s best shapers is finishing off months of preparation on the course construction. All courses are going to be in perfect shape from tomorrow’s start of practice. The big air and halfpipe venues, placed at the side of the winter resort provide unique surroundings for the event. The spectator arena on the bottom of the big air jump was newly built for the World Champs, which will offer amazing stadium atmosphere during the contests.

I’m really excited about how everything is starting to shape up here in Yabuli. After weeks of work it’s going to be incredible to see all of the riders finally ride the venues tomorrow. We’ve got three days of practice ahead to gather feedback & dial everything in before we start qualifiers on Saturday. We had a great run through at each venue today with all the local staff & it was really impressive to see their dedication & enthusiasm. Despite speaking different languages, we’re all working towards the same goal of making this World Championships one to remember”. Liam Griffin – Competition Director.

Building the slopestyle in China has been super interesting. I have seen things I would not have expected, but I am really happy with the way it’s looking. There are some good transition options on the jibs and a cool twist on a transition roller in the course as well. Really looking forward to getting some rider feedback on it all.” Charles Beckinsale – Slopestyle course designer.

World’s Best Snowboarders are Heading To People’s Republic of China

On March 9th to 16th the world’s top freestyle snowboarders will drop in at the 2016 Corona World Championships of Snowboarding in Yabuli, People’s Republic of China, battling for the titles in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and for the first time also in Big Air with 500,000 US$ in prize money. With less than a month to go, the confirmed rider field is without a doubt the strongest in recent history. Amongst the 250 competing riders are all the stars that snowboarding has to offer including Kelly Clark, Jamie Anderson, Shaun White and Mark McMorris. This event marks the first time People’s Republic of China will host a top-level international snowboarding competition in all 3 disciplines.

Defending Champions
The four defending World Champions will be in Yabuli defending their titles won at Oslo 2012. WCS Picks From The Field of Players
Current pick with the odds tipped in their favor in men’s slopestyle is Mark McMorris (CAN), who’s won almost every event he’s entered in the past few seasons is the man most people will be betting on to take the 2016 World Championship title. He will be followed closely by his fellow teammate Sebastien Toutant (CAN), Japan’s Yuki Kadono and Norway’s Ståle Sandbech.

Jamie Anderson (USA) is the odds-on favourite for women’s slopestyle, but with the rail and jib feature heavy course Kiwi jibber Christy Prior (NZL) could prove to be her toughest competition. In men’s halfpipe the all-time favourite Shaun White has his eyes on the prize, but young Japanese superstar Ayumu Hirano is hot on his heels with consistent big wins upping his ante. Tipping the scales, American heavy hitters Matt Ladley and Taylor Gold will prove challenging for Iouri Podlatchikov (SUI) in defending his title.

The women’s halfpipe is going to be a close one; leading lady Kelly Clark (USA) faces some stiff competition from the up-and-comers in the women’s pipe scene who’ve been proving their worth at the Elite level events over the past seasons, with the likes of Chloe Kim (USA) and Arielle Gold (USA) consistently taking out the top podium spots.

All New Titles
The World Championships of Snowboarding in 2016 introduces all new Big Air Champion titles in the men’s and women’s big air discipline, where our picks for taking out the top spots are Torgeir Bergrem (NOR) or Max Parrot (CAN) in the men’s and defending champion Spencer O’Brien (CAN) or Anna Gasser (AUT) in the women’s. Interview with WCS SS and BA Builder Charles Beckinsale

Charles Beckinsale works as park manager at Perisher during the southern hemisphere winter and park builder at Whistler Blackcomb during the northern hemisphere winter. World Snowboard Tour Crew recently caught up with him for a quick chat about the World Championship Slopestyle Course and the Big Air set up for the 2016 World Snowboarding Championship! Learn more here!

How do you feel about building the World Championship Slopestyle Course and the Big Air set up?
Its a real honour and not something I take lightly, just like the riders, I’m going there to do my best with what is there so hopefully when they arrive they get the best course of the season and its a great experience for everyone. I haven’t been to China and it’s not something I would have imagined I would be doing, but I’m really exited about building it.

What have you been up to over the past few years that have brought you into the spotlight to become the World Championship Slopestyle builder?
I would think its been the work I have done on the Mile High Slopestyle course and Perisher features, the Whistler Ski and Snowboard Festival and even just the jump lines I’ve worked on for the park programs I work at. They are hit all day every day by riders and word travels if something is on point. I’ve been lucky enough to also work on some really big film projects in both the ski and snowboard world, I think these more than anything have brought a bit of a spotlight on my work. Having good working relationships with the riders and event and shoot coordinators really helps too.

You are more of a film feature builder than a competition course builder. What is the build you have done recently that you liked the most?
I do build a lot of special features. The butter pad/whale tail I built for Level one productions last spring in Whistler. Just seeing it getting ridden, the way the transitions matched up and the flow between the fist landing and the next take off was very satisfying for me. Good features are good features; at the end of the day the only difference between a singular feature and a slopestyle course is how you set them out so that there is good flow.

Cutting-Edge WCS 2016 Design Revealed

With 100 days to go until the second edition of the World Championships of Snowboarding takes place in Yabuli, China, WCS 2016 has released the course designs for the Slopestyle and Big Air venues, revealing a different take on the standard Slopestyle narrative and an impressive Big Air stadium setting.

WCS Big Air

In February 2012 the international snowboarding community gathered in Oslo, Norway for the inaugural World Championships of Snowboarding (WCS), hosted by the World Snowboard Federation and TTR Pro Snowboarding. This winter, March 9th to 16th 2016, the snowboarding community will head east to Yabuli in China´s Northeast, to determine the world’s best in competitive freestyle snowboarding in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air. Snowboarding’s big names will go head-to-head and vie for the six-figure prize pool of $500,000 USD and the six acclaimed world champ titles, on world-class competition venues unlike any before seen in China to date.

“WCS in China is a challenge on many fronts. While kickstarting the most promising winter sports market of the future, we’re implementing progression on all levels. Our teams have been working since Oslo 2012 on the concept and execution of this historic event”. states Reto Lamm TTR President

Changing it Up: Jumps First, Rails Last

WCS 2016 changes it up from the typical course build, kicking off the 700m long Slopestyle run with 3 kickers of 19m, 22m and 25m in size, leading into a creative feature loaded jib section consisting of 2 rail islands and a huge L-shaped playground featuring a wall-ride and a number of rails and ledges.
The Slopestyle course takes full advantage of the Yabuli terrain, allowing the riders to unleash their creative potential. Head shaper Ryan Neptune brings a team of 9 shapers with him that will work alongside the Chinese specialists and Yabuli Ski Resort.

“For the World Champs our idea was to form an international team of shaping experts. We have specialists on board from the US, Canada, NZ, Australia, and together we have come up with a innovative course design for the slopestyle that we are stoked to reveal today“, says head shaper Ryan Neptune (US).

“The Slopestyle course at the Yabuli World Snowboard Championships is going showcase one of the most creative venues for world class riders to date.  Mixing up the the traditional jumps which increase in scale as the first features on the course and ending in three rail islands with the last feature a multiple rail section that the riders will need to settle after they land their jumps will add a high level of expectation for the best riders, says competition director Lee Gregory Johnson.

Built atop a venue previously used for aerials, the WCS 2016 Big Air arena will give spectators a spectacular view of the action. The 27m Jump will set the stage that will showcase the riders’ progressive flair and technical skill.
