Ready to play the ZERO game?

This is an exciting and engaging card game that happens to teach one about climate action! Through the game, you can learn more about actions that have a positive or negative impact on our planet and lives. This game is meant for all ages, even adults can play. So, dive in, play around, and discover how actions can lead to big change for a livable future!

How to Play

Change is easy – just like the idea of the game itself: in a clockwise direction, you

always discard a card of the same value or higher than the card played by the previous

player. Can’t play? Pick up the pile! The player next to you starts over.

Last person with cards in hand = ZERO Climate Jerry.

The steps 

1. Deal each player 3 cards facing down, 3 cards facing up on those down cards, and 3 cards in hand
2. All non-dealt cards go in the pick-up pile
3. Whoever places the lowest card first, begins the game
4. On your turn, play 1 or more matching cards (e.g. 3 cards of +2)
5. End your turn by picking up cards from the pile; you must always have at least 3 cards in your hand until the pick-up pile is gone
6. Play hand cards first until the pick-up pile is gone, then use the upfacing cards, and finally the face-down cards one by one.
7. Last player with cards in hand = the Climate Jerry

The cards

• Card values go from lowest to highest: -5, -4, -3, … +3, +4, +5
• Cards that can only be played if they fit into the sequence in terms of value
  • “-2” or “7”: the next player must play a card equal or lower than -2
  • “-1” or “8”: the next player is skipped
• Cards that can be played at any point
  • “Engage with your government on climate action” or “2”: a special card that restarts the game to -5
  • “Talk to friends and family about the climate emergency” or “3”: a special card that is transparent, which means that the value of card underneath still counts
  • “Join any climate action NGO” or “10”: a special card that clears the discard pile. The person to play the card starts the game afresh 

Additional features:

• If there are 4 cards of the same value on top of each other on the discard pile, the discard pile is cleared and the person to play the last of the 4 cards starts over again (just like „Join any climate action NGO“)
• Before the game begins, everyone may once swap any or all of the three cards in their hand with the cards facing up
