The World Championships of Snowboarding 2016

The World Championships of Snowboarding will be the pinnacle event of tour for 2016 in Yabuli, China. With 400 rider spaces and a very open criteria allowing both high ranking WSPL riders as well as national quota spaces the event will showcase the best that snowboarding has to offer.

The leading international park and pipe builders have been contracted ensuring a quality set up for an Elite Level event. The TTR Tour Champions will also be crowned at WCSnowboarding in Yabuli as the closing event to the season.

Course Construction Team 

Richard Schollum helped work on the 2002 SLC Olympics and was the park and pipe builder for 5 years at Park City and main mechanic, has worked on countless US Opens, Nippon opens, Canadian nationals and Sony Snow Crown.

The organising committee will shortly release the accommodation and transportation information.

Accommodation – there are 3 event hotel partners in Yabuli Resort – the Avaunce Hotel, International Broadcast Center Hotel and Club Med.

Transport from the airport to Yabuli will be by shuttle bus service. All riders will be FOC and all entourage will be charged approx. 100USD return. Once in Yabuli all transportation will be FOC for all people associated with the WCSnowboarding.

PART. 1: QUALIFICATION CRITERIA BY WSF AND TTR 

Rider Field Sizes at the World Championships of Snowboarding
The World Championships of Snowboarding will have a maximum of 400 entry spots available for male and female athletes to compete in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air disciplines.

Slopestyle and Halfpipe

Field sizes are estimated at 85 male riders and 55 female qualified riders in Slopestyle and Halfpipe.

Big Air

The field size for Big Air is 12 spots for women and 37 for men. Men’s field distribution will take the top 25 from the World Snowboarding Points List (WSPL), 10 national riders based on invitation by WSF (see criteria below) and, in addition, 2 wildcard spots will be allocated by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC). The 12 women’s spots will be allocated by invitation. All male riders must be in the top 100 of the WSPL in order to compete.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
In order to participate in the World Championships of Snowboarding, riders will need to fulfill the minimum requirement of being ranked in the Men´s Top 250 and in the Women´s Top 125 in the respective WSPL discipline ranking.

WSPL Halfpipe includes all Halfpipe and Quarterpipe competitions globally, ranking riders who have competed at least once in the past 52 weeks.

WSPL Slopestyle includes all Slopestyle competitions globally, ranking riders who have competed at least once in the last 52 weeks.

A rider’s position on the respective WSPL is determined by the average of his/her best three results for the WSPL Halfpipe and best four results for the WSPL Slopestyle over a rolling 52 week period. The cut-off date for qualification into the 2016 event will be 15th December 2015.

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA
Four different criteria have been defined in order for riders to qualify for a spot to compete in the World Championships of Snowboarding, after meeting the minimum requirements outlined above.

  • WSPL Quota

Male riders ranked 50th or higher on the WSPL as of Dec 15, 2015.

Female riders ranked 30th or higher on the WSPL as of Dec 15, 2015.

The Top 50 Men and Top 30 Women on the WSPL Halfpipe or Slopestyle and the top 25 WSPL Big Air as of15th December 2015 will be automatically eligible to compete in the respective discipline.

  • WSF Nations Quota

Each WSF Member Nation is entitled to qualify one male and one female rider in each discipline (HP and SS). Each nation is entitled to a maximum of 4 spots (2 HP and 2 SS). Quota spots cannot be used for another discipline/gender. In addition, WSF will invite 10 male Big Air Riders (WSF BA Wildcards) – see criteria below.

Each WSF Member Nation will define national qualification criteria, i.e. a national event, such as a national championships event, or other national criteria approved by the WSF Event Committee till 15.09.2015, in order to qualify riders. However, in order to attend, all riders must be in the top 250 (men) and 125 (women) on the WSPL. If a top national rider does not meet this criteria, a petition may be submitted to the WCS for approval. Granting a petition is at the sole discretion of the WCS and no more than one petition will be granted per nation.

All national quota spots for the 2016 event have to be announced by the WSF National Snowboard Associations no later than 15th December 2015

If one or several riders are already eligible to compete through one of the other qualification criteria or if due to injury or other circumstances a nominated rider cannot start, the open spot can be offered to the next best national rider not yet qualified based on the defined national qualification criteria as long as minimum requirements are met.

  • Criteria for the 10 WSF Big Air Wildcards

The WSF Wildcards will be awarded based on the WSPL Big Air Rank. The next best riders listed who have not qualified will gain a wildcard.                                                                                                           In order to guarantee a wider nation variety, only one additional wildcard per nation is possible. Only nations with less than 4 qualified riders will be eligible for wildcards. In case of an injury, the next best rider of the same nation on the WSPL will gain access to the wildcard.                                                                                                 In general, the minimum criteria have to be fulfilled. 

  • TTR World Champions and Elite Level title Winners

All World Snowboard Tour Champions of the last three seasons (2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15) are eligible to compete in all disciplines.

All Riders who have won an Elite Level Event on the World Snowboard Tour in the last 52 weeks prior to 8th March 2015 and who are not already qualified, will automatically qualify for a WCS spot.

  • Local Organizing Committee Wildcards

The LOC of the World Championships of Snowboarding has the right to qualify additional male and female competitors in each discipline (10 riders total for BA – 2 Men, HP – 2 Women + 2 Men and SS – 2 Women + 2 Men, subject to approval by TTR/WSF

REGISTRATION PROCESS
Registration and entry into the World Championships of Snowboarding is free to all riders who meet the defined qualification criteria.

All qualified riders are required to confirm their attendance as soon as possible and no later than 1st January 2015. This is allow the necessary time to issue an invitation from the Chinese Government and process a visa.

The registration system and website will be provided by TTR/WSF – available autumn 2015.

TITLES, AWARDS & PRIZE MONEY AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF SNOWBOARDING

Riders will be competing for male and female Halfpipe World Champion, Big Air and Slopestyle World Champion titles at the World Championships of Snowboarding. These World Championship titles will be awarded to the winning male and female rider in each discipline. In addition, all top three finishers in each discipline (first, second and third place finishers) will receive recognition in the form of a medal/trophy along with prize money.

This criteria is currently used for selection of the National Snowboard Team while the Ranking List is used to prioritise those riders for entry into events such as FIS World Cup, Junior World Championships and World Championships. The criteria and ranking list is reviewed and approved by the SSA Snowboard Committee each year so small changes may be implemented prior to the 2015/2016 season.

  • the results from our national championships (The Belgian Open, Les 2 Alpes 2015)
  • the 2 best results for each rider in international competitions

2016 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF SNOWBOARDING

INTRODUCTION

  1. This document sets out the process for identifying those athletes who will be invited by Canada~Snowboard, TTR Pro Snowboarding and the World Snowboard Federation to participate in the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding. The World Championships of Snowboarding are a major competitive opportunity for members of the Canada~Snowboard High Performance Program. The 2016 World Championships will take place in March 2016 in Yabuli, China.

 

  1. Canada~Snowboard, through its membership with the World Snowboard Federation (WSF) is granted the right to qualify eligible athletes to compete at 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding through the criteria of WSF nation quota.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Canada~Snowboard’s first objective at the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding is to win at least two medals.

 

  1. Canada~Snowboard’s second objective at the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding is to place at least:

50% of its participating athletes in the top 12 in the Slopestyle and Big                                      Air events and;

50% of its participating athletes in the top 24 in the Halfpipe events.

  1. Canada~Snowboard’s third objective at the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding is to develop athletes with the potential to medal in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

QUOTAS

  1. The World Championships of Snowboarding will have a maximum of 300 spots available for male and female athletes to compete across all disciplines.         The estimated field sizes will be 70 riders for men in each discipline and 50              riders for women in each discipline. Big Air is still under discussion.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. To be eligible to participate in the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding, an athlete must:
  2. a) Be in good standing with Canada~Snowboard and with his or her provincial snowboard association. This is applicable for all athletes who qualify under the nation quotas.
  3. b) Be ranked in the Men´s Top 250 or in the Women´s Top 125 on the respective WSPL (World Snowboarding Points List) discipline ranking. The cut-off date for qualification into the 2016 event will be Tuesday December 15th, 2015.

 

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA

  1. Riders can qualify for a spot to compete in the World Championships of Snowboarding through one of the following four criteria, provided that     eligibility requirements are fulfilled.
  • World Snowboarding Points List Quota (WSPL)                                                  The Top 50 Men and Top 30 Women on the WSPL for Halfpipe and Slopestyle at the announced cut-off date (December 15, 2015) will be automatically eligible to compete in the respective discipline at the event.
  • TTR World Champions and Elite Level Winners                                                         All TTR World Tour Champions from the last three years (2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15) are eligible to compete in all disciplines at the World Championships of Snowboarding. All World Snowboard Tour Elite Level title winners from the last 52 weeks prior to 08.03.2015 are eligible to compete in the discipline in which they won the title.
    • The following Canadian athletes qualify under this criterion for being crowned as former TTR World Champions.        Maxence Parrot 2014 Big Air Champion, Mark McMorris 2013 Slopestyle Champion and                  Sebastien Toutant: 2013 Big Air Champion.
  • Local Organizing Committee Wild Cards                                                                                                                                    The organizing committee of the World Championships of Snowboarding is entitled to qualify two additional competitors in each discipline for men and women (eight total wild cards) who all need to be approved by TTR/WSF.
  • WSF Nation Quota Each WSF member is entitled to qualify one rider for both men and women in the disciplines of Halfpipe and Slopestyle. The allocation of these four quota spots will be assigned using the Canadian Ranking Lists for the corresponding disciplines and genders. These quotas will be assigned to the highest ranked national competitors who have not qualified via the other criteria methods. In the event of a tie, the athlete with the highest points at a single event shall be selected. In the event of a further tie, the athlete with the next highest points at a single event shall be selected until the tie is broken. The allocation of these quotas will be announced on Friday December 15th, 2015.

SELECTION PROCESS FOR NATION QUOTAS

  1. Selection rankings notwithstanding, Canada~Snowboard shall have the discretion to select athletes to participate in an order other than that indicated by the rankings. Canada~Snowboard shall also have the discretion to select fewer male and/or female athletes than the maximum quota provided by WSF. The grounds for any such decisions must be set out in detail in the minutes of the meeting of the Selection Committee, and must reflect the objectives of Canada~Snowboard as presented in the General High Performance Program Policies and in Park to Podium: Canada Snowboard’s Long Term Athlete Development Plan.
  1. Grounds which may be considered in decisions such as those indicated in Section 9 shall include, but may not be limited to:
  2. The athlete’s commitment to a long-term training program, as demonstrated by training logs, evaluations, and other documentation maintained by the athlete and her or his coach.
  3. The athlete’s level of physical conditioning, evaluated in terms of the physical conditioning benchmarks established for the High Performance Program.
  4. Anomalies in competitions, arising from factors such as weather or abnormally small field sizes, which are determined to be a factor in the attainment of or failure to attain results.
  5. Gaps in the points used to rank athletes, which may be taken to represent a significant gap in performance ability. For instance, if three athletes have 100, 97, and 96 points respectively, and the next ranked athlete has 85 points, a gap may be said to exist which indicates an athlete’s potential ability or inability to compete at the same level as other Canada~Snowboard athletes in the same discipline.

EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES FOR NATION QUOTAS

  1. It may be that an athlete who is otherwise selected to participate in the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding is or becomes, by reason of a health related curtailment of activities, unable to compete. In such circumstances Canada~Snowboard shall have the discretion to replace this athlete with another athlete.
  1. Canada~Snowboard may, at any time, require an athlete who appears, by reason of a health curtailment of activities, to be unable to participate in training or competition activities to obtain a medical assessment conducted by a Canada~Snowboard recognized doctor. The purpose of the medical assessment is to assess the extent of the athlete’s inability to compete and the anticipated time of the athlete’s recovery.

SELECTION COMMITTEES FOR NATION QUOTAS

  1. The Selection Committee for the Halfpipe and Slopestyle nation quota’s shall consist of the HPP Director, the Coaches of the respective HPP programs and the HPP Manager.

 

  1. The Executive Director, on the basis of the recommendations of the Selection Committees, shall ratify the final selection of athletes for the 2016 World Championships of Snowboarding.

APPEALS & DISPUTE RESOLUTION FOR NATION QUOTAS

  1. Any decision of the professional staff relating to the operation and conduct of the HPP may be appealed by any member of Canada~Snowboard who is materially affected by that decision, and who is a member in good standing. Appeals must be conducted in accordance with the Canada~Snowboard Appeals Protocol, which is available on Canada~Snowboard website (http://www.canadasnowboard.ca/).
  1. Issues not otherwise covered by this Selection Protocol shall be resolved by Canada~Snowboard’s Dispute Resolution Policy, which is available on the Canada~Snowboard website (http://www.canadasnowboard.ca/)

  • If the top ranked rider has already qualified via other methods or is injured, then it will be left with the BSS committee to decide as to who takes the GBR quota spot by taking in to consideration the WSPL ranking as well as the published skill based criteria used to select the GB Park and Pipe Team.

Qualification Criteria for national quota spots:

Finnish Snowboard Association (FSA) will qualify one rider for both men and women in each discipline. Finland is entitled to a maximum of 4 spots and will use a national championships event as qualifier.

Qualification will take place in National Championships event in Ruka, Finland, 9.-12.4.2015. Disciplines are Slopestyle and Halfpipe for both men and women.

Best rider in each category and discipline will be qualified to World Championships.

Qualification Criteria for national quota spots:
For the 2 Slopesyle spots (male and female), the Italian NSA “FSI”, propose to use a national slope style tour “Italian Snowboard Tour” that will elect the best italian male and female rider for slope style discipline.
Italian Snowboard Tour is a national circuit with 8 stop around different italian ski resort from Alps to middle Italy, it will start 25th january 2015 and will end with the final contest on march 2015.

For the 2 Halfpipe spots, FSI should organize an halfpipe event during the current winter season 2014/2015. If this will not possible, FSI should select the riders with an internal committee, to check who is the best rider in half pipe for male and female.

In case of injuries or any other events which will not allow the selected riders to participate Yabuli 2016, FSI will select Italian riders using WSPL.

Qualification Criteria for national quota spots:

*Best man or woman on the discipline SBS or HP at the Dutch Championship 2015 in Laax

Besides the national quota the minimal requirement for participating in the event is

* ranked in the Men´s Top 250 or in the Women´s Top 125 on the respective WSPL (World Snowboarding Points List) discipline ranking.
WSPL Halfpipe includes all Halfpipe and Quarter pipe competitions globally and will rank riders who have competed at least once in the last 52 weeks prior to the cut-off date. WSPL Slopestyle includes all Slopestyle competitions globally and will rank riders who have competed at least once in the last 52 weeks.
A rider’s position on the respective WSPL is determined by the average of his/her best three results for the WSPL Halfpipe and best four results for the WSPL Slopestyle over a rolling 52 week period. The cut-off date for qualification into the 2016 event will be Tuesday, December 15th, 2015.

 

NEW ZEALAND

Qualification Criteria for national quota spots:
Snow Sports New Zealand will use the World Snowboard Points List for selection of riders to the 2016 WSF World Champs in Yabuli. The top ranked available riders will represent New Zealand.

No athlete shall be precluded from selection because of injury on the selection date provided they will return to their previous performance level (with appropriate medical clearance) by the event.


There is no right of appeal from decisions regarding selection or non- selection of athletes to the team. Any athlete aggrieved by a decision of the selection panel regarding their selection or non-selection to a team may submit their grievance in writing to the Selectors within 48 hours of the selection announcement. The Selectors shall use their best efforts to arrange without prejudice meeting or response as soon as practicable to discuss the grievance in good faith with the aggrieved athlete.

In 2015-2016 season, we will use a selection of major events like TTR / Dew Tour / Grand Prix to evaluate which riders who will get the national quota spots. The Norwegian snowboard federation will evaluate the candidates for the quota spots for Norway.

The Peruvian Snowboarding & Sandboarding Association has decided to establish the following qualification criteria to attend the WSF-TTR World Snowboarding Championship:

The Peruvian Riders must achieve the following requirements to participate in World Snowboarding Championships:

1) Peruvian Nationality.

2) International experience in High Level International Snowboarding Events according to the following priority:

1° TTR Events

2° Industry Events (as for example: Rock Star Energy, DC, Burton, etc and also appearances in Snowboard Industry Movies).

3° FIS Events

4° International Clinics and Training Camps;

Instead of International experience, the Rider must be ranked within Top Ten National Ranking according to the last National Championship.

Any rider which is not qualified based on their rank, will be eligible for a spot based on their results shown in WSPL and final confirmation made by head coach for the Slovenian Snowboard Team.

discipline.

Therefore, each nation is entitled to a maximum of 4 spots and will need to use

a national event, such as a national championships event, or national criteria approved by

the WSF Event Committee, to qualify riders.
