Eric Beauchemin Wins The Inaugural Edition Of The Beijing Summer Rail Jam

Despite hot and humid weather conditions in Beijing, an estimated 6000 spectators came to Beijing Sanlitun Soho to witness the 2016 Beijing Summer Rail Jam hosted by GoSki and HitFM.

19 riders from all four corners of the world joined the event, and gave a spectacle to the hyped crowd. Eric Beauchemin (USA) won the judges over with a 50/50 Backside 360, and an impressive 50-50 Frontside 540, Sean Murphy’s (USA) solid runs with the best trick being a BackSide LipSlide Kink Rail to Rail slide earned him the second spot made Ryusei Takahashi (JPN) third with an uber stylish Half Cab 540 to Backside 360.

The set up consisted of two kinked rails, a pipe rail and a wall ride. The athletes performed to the best of their abilities, and pleased crowds and judges alike. The top Chinese rider Ma Guo Sen battled until round six, and it’s clear that while Chinese riders have progressed, there is still a gap in style and technique to be closed compared to riders from the US or Europe or Japan.

The riders noted that it was a special time to be in Chinas capital at the first anniversary of Beijing’s winning bid to host the Winter Olympics 2022. The experience is unforgettable, and the stoke for the sport will help to bring more people on the slopes and push the sport as a whole.

Lai Gang of GoSki adds: “One of the reasons to hold the event was to attract the attention of people who have never tried snowboarding before, or who did not know much about snowboarding at all. The Beijing Summer Rail Jam acted as a sort bridge and gave them a taste of snowboarding and the special culture that lies at the essence of it. I am overwhelmed that so many people came to the show and reflected the positive vibes and instantly admired the athletes. It definitely opens new doors, and we plan to bring the event to more cities across China.”

Through the live stream and TV formats, millions of Chinese were reached and immediately snowboarding captured their minds, setting the tone for years to come.

RESULTS

  1. Eric Beauchemin (USA)
  2. Sean Murphy (USA)
  3. Ryusei Takahashi (JPN)
  4. Sean Ryan (USA)
  5. Jacco Bos (NLD)
  6. Yuya Akado (JPN)

X Games Oslo on the World Snowboard Tour

ESPN and TV2, the leading commercial broadcaster in Norway, will bring X Games Oslo to the Norwegian capitol this winter, Feb. 24-28, 2016. This is the first time both summer and winter sports will be contested internationally at the same X Games event, with disciplines including Snowboard and Ski Big Air (men and women), Snowboard and Ski SuperPipe (men and women) and Skateboard Street (men and women). ESPN and TV2 will each air 21 hours of live coverage. TV2 will air the competitions live in Norway, while ESPN’s coverage will be shown live on ESPN3 and as part of its “World of X Games” series on ABC.

Like all X Games events, in addition to world-class action sports competition, X Games Oslo will showcase a world-class headlining musical performance on Saturday night at the Tøyen venue, as well as local musicians throughout the weekend.

Oslo is going to be the winter sport capitol of the world, and we look forward to having the world’s elite in Oslo in February,” said Hallstein Bjercke, Oslo’s vice mayor of cultural affairs and business development. “I’m confident this will inspire young Norwegians to strap into skis and boards and get out to the hill. We support X Game Oslo to show new aspects of the sport city Oslo, and we would like to present Oslo as the world’s best compact arena for culture and sports.

Tim Reed, ESPN X Games vice president, added: “We’re very excited to team up with TV2 and SAHR Concepts, and commend the Oslo city government for its support in helping make X Games Oslo a reality. We look forward to showcasing some of the world’s best athletes in one of the most unique and dynamic cities with a rich history in winter sports and impressive list of top homegrown athletes.”

“We really appreciate the enthusiasm and engagement from the athletes,” said Jan Ove Årsaether, TV2 director of news and sports. “We are going to create a sports celebration in Oslo in order to draw young people to both the arenas and the TV screen. Now it’s time to look forward to a top-class event.”

The Skateboard Street competitions will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Skur 13 warehouse at Filipstad Harbor along the picturesque Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen areas, marking the first time an international-level skateboarding competition will be held in Norway. The Skateboard Street course will be built as a permanent structure and left open to the public following X Games Oslo.

Snowboard SuperPipe competitions will be held on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Oslo Winter Park, while Snowboard and Ski Big Air will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Tøyen. X Games Oslo will conclude Sunday, Feb. 28, with the Ski SuperPipe competitions at Oslo Winter Park.

The first 22 invited athletes include Norwegian X Games medalists Ståle Sandbech, Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen and Kjersti Buaas, as well as Olympic and X Games gold medalist Kelly Clark, who also won the 2012 World Snowboarding Championships in Oslo. The second wave of athlete invites will be announced on Dec. 1. Additionally, eight Norwegian skateboarders will have an opportunity to compete for one wild-card invite to X Games Oslo at a separate Norwegian qualifier event. The full invite list can be viewed here.

We have a lot of great snowboarders in Norway, so it is really important to have a big event like the X Games in Oslo,” said Ståle Sandbech, X Games and Olympic snowboard medalist. “To be able to compete in my sport in my country in front of all my friends and family is huge.

X Games and Olympic snowboard gold medalist Kelly Clark said, “I am looking forward to X Games Oslo this year. They hosted a great event for World Championships in 2012, so it will be fun to compete in that pipe again.”

The agreement to bring X Games to Oslo was made possible by support from the government of the City of Oslo. ESPN and TV2 will work with local organizer SAHR Concepts in staging the multi-sport event. In addition to the content on ESPN’s U.S. media platforms, X Games Oslo will be televised globally on ESPN International networks and distributed to other international media outlets and television broadcasters via ESPN’s media distribution business.

Tickets for X Games Oslo will be available for purchase on Dec. 1.

German Slopestyle Championship 2015

When on November 28th 2015 numerous snowboarders travel to the Snowpark Kaunertal, it is clear why: the European Championships and the German Championship in Slopestyle take place on the Kaunertal Glacier. Goodies and valuable points for the AFP and World Snowboard Tour are up for grabs.

KT-europacup-Flyer-Hires

In less than a month the Snowpark Kaunertal will become the stage for Europe’s best freeskiers and snowboarders when the European Championships will be held in slopestyle. The park will be shaped to perfection by the Schneestern crew, so that the participants find a decent setup and the contest will be a great success.

The European Championships will be subdivided in the categories men & women – each freeski and snowboard – and provides all shredders with the chance to gain points for the tour and win some valuable goodies. Furthermore, the Germans Slopestyle Championships 2015 will be held on this day. As the event unfortunately couldn’t take place last season,  we are very pleased to welcome the best German shredders at the Kaunertal Glacier. Those who want to relax a bit after a few runs, will find their place at the sunny park base. There, sun loungers and mellow beats are waiting for all snowboarders and freeskiers.

Freezing your WSPL Points

The Frozen Points Protocol allows an injured rider to retain his/her seeding rights during the period of injury and for a period of time after he/she has recovered from the injury. To achieve this, a riders points on the respective rankings will be “frozen” as of the week when the injury occurred and the rider will be ranked based on the frozen points on the respective ranking as long as the rider’s status is injured or recovered.

Upon receipt of a medical certificate, signed by a medical doctor, a rider’s WSPL points will be frozen as of the week when the injury occured. As long as a rider has a “frozen points” status – either injured or recovered – his/her ranking on the respective WSPL will be calculated on his/her frozen points based on the following rule: The frozen points of an injured/recovered rider will be reduced by 50% after 52 weeks have passed since the injury occurred.

WHAT ARE THE WORLD SNOWBOARDING POINTS LISTS (WSPL)?
The WSPLs are based on event results from all major global snowboarding competitions, including both Tour and non-Tour  events. A rider’s position on the WSPL for his/her respective discipline is determined each week by calculating an average of the points from his/her best results in that discipline within the previous 52-week period. For more detailed info on the WSPLs and their calculation: www.worldsnowboardtour.com/world-snowboarding-points-list
