Reports from 2016 WSF and TTR Joint General Assembly: A New Direction For Snowboarding

At the annual WSF and TTR GA, held in Kleinarl, Austria, delegates from 22 Nations joined the two day long meetings, representing National Snowboard Associations, Riders, Event Organizers and Boardsports Media.

WSF And TTR Drive All Aspects Of Snowboarding Into Its Next Phase

The results of last months of workgroups and last days of joint sessions between WSF and TTR moves snowboarding forward in an unrivalled way. During their meetings, WSF and TTR agreed to collectively pave the way to create a new governing structure for International Snowboarding. The new organisation will serve Snowboarding on all levels, in a completely neutral way, smashing down walls that have built up over years adding to an already splintered landscape for competition snowboarding. The future will provide a transparent non-confrontational and unified sports system that will be extremely easy for the world to navigate.

With immediate effect, Nations Representatives, Event Organiser Representatives and a Rider Representative will develop necessary structural details under the leadership of TTR President Reto Lamm.

Working Groups and Consultants appointed during the GA contribute and oversee the developments, and reports will be provided to the public on a regular basis.

WCS GmbH, the joint company owned by WSF and TTR, will act as executional body for all commercial matters.

In the near future the final structure will be proposed that combines a global Snowboard Association and a company to serve the changed world of snowboarding.

The leverage on moving with the needs of the industry will have a huge impact on Snowboarding now and in the future.

Adapting to the current needs of the riders, national associations and industry is our primary goal.” says Meinhard Trojer, President of WSF.

TTR President Reto Lamm concludes: “The way riders and organisers are included gives everyone a clear responsibility, and things will improve even more based on our new ideas.

Developing Women Snowboarding As Core Competence

The WSF Education Committee held a workshop that gained valuable insights to progress female snowboarding. Results of the workshop will be analysed and published on the WSF website. “Leveraging existing synergies and looking at each host country individually will be key to our growth. The workshop was perceived with great interest, and challenges are ready to be turned into opportunities in Women Snowboarding.” says Miriam Deller who initiated WSF Pro Women within the Education Committee in 2015.

Market Development and Media Trends

Marco Sampaoli, WSF Vice President, provided an overview of the status of the European Winter Sports and Outdoor Market. Current trends imply that collaborations between resorts, tourism institutions, governments and sports federations become increasingly necessary. Looking at relevant data from snowboarding and related sports provided a vivid picture of the recent and coming developments. “More than ever, successful strategies will be based on a combination of deep knowledge of market trends and the ability to swiftly integrate them.’ comments Marco Sampaoli.

Finals and crowning of the royal family at the 4th Tourstop of Zillertal Välley Rälley

Tons of titles, medals and trophees were up for grabs at the fourth and final Zillertal Välley Rälley hosted by Ride Snowboards tourstop on April 2nd and 3rd 2016 at the Betterpark Hintertux. Beside the tourstop podiums, the overall tour winners and thus the royal Zillertal Välley Rälley family 2016, got crowned at Hintertux Glacier that weekend. Due to challenging conditions with strong winds and flat lights the Ästhetiker decided to change the formate from slopestyle to rail jam. Almost 80 competitors and teams of all nations were battling it out in the finals, showing off with their best tricks on the jib line. At the end of the day, a lot of smiling faces were sharing podiums. The recap video covers all the action: https://vimeo.com/161467190

On April 2nd, 2016, the Betterpark Hintertux just opened the doors for the spring season with the Zillertal Välley Rälley hosted by Ride coaching and training day. While the Ästhetiker coaches Steve Gruber, Friedl Kolar and Klaus Hofmeister were shredding around the easy, medium and jib lines all day long with up-and-coming talents, men were already warming up for the final contest on the pro line. For the perfect end of the day, the tourism association Tux Finkenberg sponsored free goulash soup and drinks for everyone. Around 80 riders were gathering in Hintertux for the final competition on Sunday. Because of wind and flat lights, the Ästhetiker replaced the slopestyle by a rail jam formate.

Riders of all categories moved on to the jib lines to show off with their best tricks one more time and collect points in the World Snowboard Tour ranking. Heli Bockhorni (GER) and Niklas Huber (GER) could handle the conditions best and both took victory in the super grom category, while Annika Morgan (GER) and Gabe Adams (GBR) made it to the top spot in the groms class. Gabe also hit the jackpot as the “most impressive grom of the day.” Tereza Sebkova (CZE) and Chandler Hunt (USA) were the winners of the rookie class and Tereza Cermakova (CZE) won the gold medal in the women´s category. Austrian coach and jib master Felix Widnig could not be beaten on the rails and got first in the men´s contest. Ukrainian rail machine Kirill Milutyn won the Vans Best Trick Award with a stylish FS blunt sex change and took home a complete streetwear outfit voucher. After the winners of the day, the overall tour winners and thus official Zillertal Välley Rälley royal family 2016, got crowned in Hintertux. Previous year´s Princess, Evy Poppe (BEL) managed to defend her title and become Princess of the Välley 2016 (super grom girls).

Niklas Huber (GER) was on top of the super grom boys ranking and became Prince of the Välley. Marie Kreisingerova (CZE) and Niclas Bothe (GER) were crowned Dutchess and Duke of the Välley for their first places in the groms category. Adela Kreisingerova (CZE) and Jan Rovenksy (CZE) were the Baroness and Baron as leaders of the rookie class. Djoelie Ectors (BEL) is the name of the new Queen of the Välley (women). With Roli Tschoder (AUT) and Patrick Fankhauser (AUT) two friends are sharing the lead of the overall men´s ranking and consequently the throne and crown of the actual King of the Välley 2016. Adela Kreisingerova (CZE) and Jan Rovensky (CZE) both further won a wildcard for the World Rookie Finals, that will be kicking off right after the Välley Rälley finals. Sarah Moser, Marketing Manager of Hintertux Glacier: ”The finals of this year´s Zillertal Välley Rälley have been at the same time a first performance test for the new setup at Betterpark Hintertux, which started into the spring season that weekend.

16_04_03_ZVR_Hintertux_Contest_Group_Photo_by_Gustav_Ohlsson_72dpi7

The great number of participants on the coaching and contest day were checking out the brand-new park setup and despite persisting south winds, everybody was content. Again, it has been a great weekend with a great bunch of young and motivated snowboarders and we are looking forward to the 4th Välley Rälley series in 2016/2017.” From now on, the XXL setup of the Betterpark Hintertux will be open maintained on a daily basis.

Snowboard Germany’s Girls Shred Session with Silli at Vans Penken Park x WSF Pro Women

The Girls Shred Session hit the Vans Penken Park with a blast – this is what happened: Nearly 60 (!) #shredqueens from Austria, Germany, England, Spain and even Australia conquered the park, chased away the fog to make place for the sun and nailed their sickest moves. Due to the massive amount of girl power it’s quite obvious why pro riders such as Silvia Mittermüller, Pilar De La Cruz and Laura Wallner took over the coaching duties and even Miss Anna Gasser paid the Girls Shred Session a visit…

573534_Girls-Shred-Session-im-Vans-Penken-Park-by-Roland-Haschka

Saturday the 26th of March, countless female snowboarders and freeskiers made their way to the Zillertal area at dawn in order to kick off the Girls Shred Session 2015/16 on time at 10 am. At first the park was still covered in a couple of fog patches, but after the highly motivated girls had taken a couple of warm-up runs with the WSF Pro Women Ambassador Silvia Mittermüller, the obstacles of the Vans Penken Park were sparkling in the sunlight. Time to start the session!

From seven-year-old #shredqueens up to 30+ girls, who were taking their first runs, everyone is welcome at the Girls Shred Session! Thanks to the freeski and snowboard coaches, each of the participants was able to state her personal goal of the day, which some of the girls already managed to achieve during the morning session. When noon arrived with bright sunshine it was time to chill and to recharge the batteries at the Grillhof Alm lodge. The break didn’t last too long, though, because soon the girls were ready for some more shred action and couldn’t wait to get on the park lift again to start the next gunfire – at that time Anna Gasser had already mixed in with the crowd!

At the end of the day everyone was totally stoked and satisfied – the participants even received various cool prizes such as Vans snowboard boots and jackets, QParks t-shirts and gym bags by the Mayrhofen Mountain Railways! After an amazing day of incredible shred action it was time to say goodbye in the late afternoon – but the girls will definitely be back for some more brilliant spring sessions at the Vans Penken Park.

Check out the Snowboard and the Freeski Edit of the Girls Shred Session! You can find current information on the Vans Penken Park till the season finale and onwards on the Facebook Fanpage and the best pics on Instagram on a daily basis! Visit mayrhofner-bergbahnen.com for updates on the current spring session setup and don’t forget to download the brand-new app for Android Smartphones and iPhones! Last but not least – the #shredqueens can be found on Instagram and Facebook as well. Ride on grrrls!

The snowpark has been setted with great care and was really appreciated by riders, who after the warm-up of saturday’s contest, pomped up during the three runs of the final contest offering a great show to the large audience showed up.

The set up included various jib structures and multi obstacle structures including a jib table with various rails and boxes, a jib zones quarter, wall, close-out, drop-in, kicker with a ball to bonk, a jump table with two kickers and a kicker with plug.

The race atmosphere was super positive with sun shining and the tipical spring weather: a real treat for all the freestyle lovers!

The men’s podium

“The set up was really nice, the shapers did a fantastic job! The training was good enough then in the race I did my best and I got a great result! I’m very happy, ” said Federico satisfied after the victory.

Billabong Flaunt It Rolls Through the North Shore

Billabong Flaunt It made its way to the West Coast stopping on Vancouver’s North Shore at Grouse Mountain this past Saturday.  The fog crept in the early morning as the competitors warmed up in practice causing the event to be modified, so the girls started the day off with the Rail Jam.  Sarah Gall, road tripping from Oregon made a pit stop at Grouse to compete at Flaunt It, landed herself in first place in the rail jam with a gap front side 270 on the down flat down rail.  She was accompanied on the podium with Kiersten Higginson and Katherine Lacroix-Vogel.

Report #BillabongFlauntIt Mount St Louis

The sun was peaking its rays through Saturday morning, shimmering over the course at Mount St Louis as Billabong Flaunt It kicked off another season of all girls events. The beats were jammin’, the vibes were hype, and all of the girls definitely brought their stoke.

Ontario’s very own Samm Denena slayed the Slopestyle course in commanding style.  Her run started with a front side tail press on the down bar followed by an under flip 540 melon grab on the first jump, then linked up a cab under flip melon on the second jump and topped off her run with a gap to nose slide on the down flat down. Mount St. Louis local, Baily McDonald scored herself a well-deserved second place and all the way from Breckenridge, Colorado, Michelle Zeller in third place.

Billabong Flaunt It_02

Fueled up and ready for the afternoon session the girls destroyed the rail jam course, which was comprised of three options; a down flat down rail, giant rainbow rail, or flat tube.  Samm Denena cleaned up again with a super technical trick on the down flat down, a front side 50-50 to front side 180 switch up, backside 180 out. Baily McDonald held onto second place with a switch boardslide down the double kink in and Quebec’s Elizabeth Hoskins finished in third.  10-year-old Kaitlyn Adams from Ohio earned the Billabong Girls Grom Award with her fearless gap to 50-50 on the double kink.
