Sven Thorgren and Hailey Langland Win The Mile High by Carlton Dry

Sweden’s Sven Thorgren and USA’s Hailey Langland dominated a star-studded field of finalists to win The 2016 Mile High by Carlton Dry.

With a unique slopestyle format, the top 12 men and top eight women from yesterday’s semi-finals had the best-of-two runs on the jump line and best-of-two runs on the rail line to impress the judges. Belgium’s Seppe Smits won the PS4 for scoring the best overall jump run, and Norwegian young gun, Marcus Cleveland won the best rail run. But it was 21-year-old Sven Thorgren who was the most consistent, with the highest combined scores from jumps and rails to take the A$5000 prizemoney for winning The Mile High by Carlton Dry.

The Mile High by Carlton Dry was sick today!” said Sven after his win. “Everybody was killing it. I’m really pumped to have a great start to the season. It was a good final, and it gets me really pumped to start the year with a win. It was a fun format with the rails and jumps judged separately. It’s a new format that was good to try here at Perisher.”

Mile_High_2016-Michael_Ciccarelli-RAD_6373-SeanRadich_photo_LO

Sven’s jump run included a double crippler on the rider-favourite halfpipe feature, followed by a double backside rodeo, cab 900 nosegrab, and finishing with a backside 1080 stalefish on the last jump. His rail run started with a switch-backside tailslide-to-270 off, butter to backside 180 on the downbar, switch-boardslide switch-up to fakie, and cab 450 gap on the flat-down rail. 17-year-old Marcus Kleveland added to his Playstation 4 prize with $3000 for second place overall, while Seppe Smits combined with his winning jump run for third overall.

Over three days in Perisher’s Front Valley, 110 of the world’s best professional slopestyle snowboarders competed against 10 of Australia’s best. “It’s pretty insane how good all the riders are here,” said Sven Thorgren. “Pretty much all the best riders in the world come here to Perisher at this time of year, and it’s great that we get to do this competition.”

In the women’s, Hailey Langland continued her domination from semi-finals, winning two Playstation 4’s for Best Jumps and Rails Line, as well as the $3000 overall winner’s prizemoney. In fact, the semi-final placings were replicated in the finals with UK’s Katie Ormerod and Japan’s Miyabi Onitsuka making up the all-teenage podium.

I love Perisher!” said the 16-year-old X Games bronze-medallist, Hailey Langland. “I love what they did with the course. It’s been really good to come out and ride it”. The Mile High by Carlton Dry is a World Snowboard Tour (WST) International Level event, and the high number of WSPL (World Snowboarding Points List) points on offer at Perisher will set up the slopestyle snowboarders coming into the Northern Hemisphere winter as they aim to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The Mile High by Carlton Dry is Bigger and Better in 2016

The Mile High by Carlton Dry is bigger and better for 2016 and returns to Perisher’s Front Valley with the biggest and best line-up of wintersports athletes ever assembled in Australia.

110 international slopestyle snowboarders will be joined by 10 of Australia’s best riders, all drawn to the world-class slopestyle course constructed in front of the Perisher Centre. Master shaper, Charles Beckinsale, and the Perisher Park crew are world-renowned for building inventive and creative features, and the 2016 Mile High slopestyle course promises to provide an epic blank canvas for the best in the world to display their art.

80 men and 40 female professional slopestyle snowboarders will compete over three days to crown The Mile High by Carlton Dry champions. Current WST-ranked world number two, Canadian Darcy Sharp, returns to defend his 2015 Mile High title and will be joined by 30 out of the top 50-ranked men. WST-ranked world number five, Tyler Nicholson, will be doing his best to steal the winner’s points from his Canadian compatriot. Another big gun to keep an eye on is 2010 Winter Olympic silver medallist, four-time-TTR World Tour Champion, and current World Big Air Champion Peetu Piiroinen from Finland.

The local field of Australians will have to do amazingly well to get to the podium this year with such a large international field but that won’t stop them from giving it their best shot. With that said though having riders like Markus Kleveland (NOR) and Billy Morgan (UK), two out of only three men in the world who have ever landed a quadruple-cork, entered in the Mile High, it’s going to be the hardest-ever year to secure a place on the podium.

In the women’s, 25 of the top 50-ranked riders will duke it out, led by world number three, 2013 World Champion and X Games gold medallist, Spencer O’Brien, who also hails from Canada, and World number 4 Karly Shorr who seems to podium at every event she enters. The women’s field is riddled with the top progressive riders coming up in the sport, many who have double corks and double flips in their bag of tricks.

The 2016 Mile High by Carlton Dry sees competitors entered from every snowboarding nation in the world and reflects the importance that this WST International Level competition plays in the long lead-up to the 2018 Winter Olympics. This year there is an increased presence of Asian freestyle competitors, including teams from all over Asia, who will compete against the USA, Canadian, Norwegian, Swedish, Kiwi, Swiss, Austrian, Dutch, German, Finnish, Italian, British, Latvian, Irish, Slovakian and Australian slopestyle teams.

With such a high-quality list of competitors, The Mile High by Carlton Dry has a stronger field than almost any other competition on the tour. For a small budget event in the tiny snowboarding industry of Australia this ‘Perfect Storm’ of nations heading downunder makes it all the more amazing. With no webcast or live TV you will have to check the World Snowboard Tour facebook page for updates.

Updates about conditions, schedules and results can be found at The Mile High Facebook page.

The Mile High by Carlton Dry will make rights-free high-resolution photos after each day of competition, as well as a dropbox folder for every rider to access raw footage for downloading and social distribution.

Eric Beauchemin Wins The Inaugural Edition Of The Beijing Summer Rail Jam

Despite hot and humid weather conditions in Beijing, an estimated 6000 spectators came to Beijing Sanlitun Soho to witness the 2016 Beijing Summer Rail Jam hosted by GoSki and HitFM.

19 riders from all four corners of the world joined the event, and gave a spectacle to the hyped crowd. Eric Beauchemin (USA) won the judges over with a 50/50 Backside 360, and an impressive 50-50 Frontside 540, Sean Murphy’s (USA) solid runs with the best trick being a BackSide LipSlide Kink Rail to Rail slide earned him the second spot made Ryusei Takahashi (JPN) third with an uber stylish Half Cab 540 to Backside 360.

The set up consisted of two kinked rails, a pipe rail and a wall ride. The athletes performed to the best of their abilities, and pleased crowds and judges alike. The top Chinese rider Ma Guo Sen battled until round six, and it’s clear that while Chinese riders have progressed, there is still a gap in style and technique to be closed compared to riders from the US or Europe or Japan.

The riders noted that it was a special time to be in Chinas capital at the first anniversary of Beijing’s winning bid to host the Winter Olympics 2022. The experience is unforgettable, and the stoke for the sport will help to bring more people on the slopes and push the sport as a whole.

Lai Gang of GoSki adds: “One of the reasons to hold the event was to attract the attention of people who have never tried snowboarding before, or who did not know much about snowboarding at all. The Beijing Summer Rail Jam acted as a sort bridge and gave them a taste of snowboarding and the special culture that lies at the essence of it. I am overwhelmed that so many people came to the show and reflected the positive vibes and instantly admired the athletes. It definitely opens new doors, and we plan to bring the event to more cities across China.”

Through the live stream and TV formats, millions of Chinese were reached and immediately snowboarding captured their minds, setting the tone for years to come.

RESULTS

  1. Eric Beauchemin (USA)
  2. Sean Murphy (USA)
  3. Ryusei Takahashi (JPN)
  4. Sean Ryan (USA)
  5. Jacco Bos (NLD)
  6. Yuya Akado (JPN)

Reports from 2016 WSF and TTR Joint General Assembly: A New Direction For Snowboarding

At the annual WSF and TTR GA, held in Kleinarl, Austria, delegates from 22 Nations joined the two day long meetings, representing National Snowboard Associations, Riders, Event Organizers and Boardsports Media.

WSF And TTR Drive All Aspects Of Snowboarding Into Its Next Phase

The results of last months of workgroups and last days of joint sessions between WSF and TTR moves snowboarding forward in an unrivalled way. During their meetings, WSF and TTR agreed to collectively pave the way to create a new governing structure for International Snowboarding. The new organisation will serve Snowboarding on all levels, in a completely neutral way, smashing down walls that have built up over years adding to an already splintered landscape for competition snowboarding. The future will provide a transparent non-confrontational and unified sports system that will be extremely easy for the world to navigate.

With immediate effect, Nations Representatives, Event Organiser Representatives and a Rider Representative will develop necessary structural details under the leadership of TTR President Reto Lamm.

Working Groups and Consultants appointed during the GA contribute and oversee the developments, and reports will be provided to the public on a regular basis.

WCS GmbH, the joint company owned by WSF and TTR, will act as executional body for all commercial matters.

In the near future the final structure will be proposed that combines a global Snowboard Association and a company to serve the changed world of snowboarding.

The leverage on moving with the needs of the industry will have a huge impact on Snowboarding now and in the future.

Adapting to the current needs of the riders, national associations and industry is our primary goal.” says Meinhard Trojer, President of WSF.

TTR President Reto Lamm concludes: “The way riders and organisers are included gives everyone a clear responsibility, and things will improve even more based on our new ideas.

Developing Women Snowboarding As Core Competence

The WSF Education Committee held a workshop that gained valuable insights to progress female snowboarding. Results of the workshop will be analysed and published on the WSF website. “Leveraging existing synergies and looking at each host country individually will be key to our growth. The workshop was perceived with great interest, and challenges are ready to be turned into opportunities in Women Snowboarding.” says Miriam Deller who initiated WSF Pro Women within the Education Committee in 2015.

Market Development and Media Trends

Marco Sampaoli, WSF Vice President, provided an overview of the status of the European Winter Sports and Outdoor Market. Current trends imply that collaborations between resorts, tourism institutions, governments and sports federations become increasingly necessary. Looking at relevant data from snowboarding and related sports provided a vivid picture of the recent and coming developments. “More than ever, successful strategies will be based on a combination of deep knowledge of market trends and the ability to swiftly integrate them.’ comments Marco Sampaoli.

Also the overall winners of the Super Grom Tour Tyrol 2016 got crowned and honored on February 20th and 21st in Mayrhofen, Hippach in the Zillertal. All 100 riders took it with challenging conditions, flat lights and winds that weekend. Nevertheless, the riding level was incredible and riders were pushing the limits once again in the open slopestyle contest, not least because the park shapers were permanently maintaining the course to keep it in perfect shape. 2016 Estonian Open Slopestyle

Estonia’s biggest event of snowboarding and freestyle-skiing waits for the best riders at Kiviõli, 12.-14th February 2016. For the second year, we are officially in World Snowboard Tour calendar as a National level event, also Estonian snowboard and freestyle-skiing championships will be held (slopestyle). The best Estonian riders will show their skills, including young world famous skier Kelly Sildaru (13 years old), who won the Dew Tour in December 2015 and also SFR Freestyle Ski Tour in January 2016 @Val Thorens, France.

The competition is more popular for Nordic and Baltic riders. Most of our foreign riders come from Finland and Latvia, right now we also have one rider from Korea. The best Estonian snowboarders will be included – Team Surfhouse (EST) first class riders Mario Visnap, Marko Vilumaa, Sulev Paalo, Priidik Vesi, Siim Aunison; also Madis Bachmann (Hawaii Express Team), freestyle-skiers Edgars Lansmanis (LAT) and Kristian Eding (Team Surfhouse, EST), Karl Pääru (Extreme Sport, EST).

Although the season kicked off pretty late here in Estonia (in the beginning of January 2016), the snowpark building in Kiviõli is in progress and it should be opened as soon as possible. The main sponsor of Estonian Open Slopestyle 2016 is Starman.

We hope to see many people attending to Estonian Open Slopestyle, supporting the riders and spending some quality time outside. In those 3 days all the other slopes (except snowpark) of Kiviõli Ski Resort will be available for everyone. We also have DJ performances in Friday and Saturday evenings.
